Lookup a Business Entity

Step 1 – Start

To look up a business entity (Corporation, Limited Liability Company/LLC, Limited Partnership) in Georgia, you must go to the Secretary of State’s Website.

On this page, you will be able to look up by Name, Control Number, Officer, or by Registered Agent. The most common way to look up a corporation is by name, but you will want to be as detailed in your query as you can in order to narrow down the results.

Step 2 – Choose Your Entity

After selecting your search option, you will be brought to a results page like the one below where you will be given a preview of the entity’s Name, Control Number, Type of Corporation, Status, and Incorporation Date. Click on the dark blue text link in order to be brought to the Entity Details Page.

Step 3 – Retrieve Information

As you can see on the Details Page (left), the user is able to view all the information on file about a particular business with the Secretary of State. View the corporation’sName (including Fictitious), Profit or Non–Profit, State of Jurisdiction, Principal Office Address, Last Annual Report, Registered Agent (Name and Address), and all Officers. If you are looking for a previously filed document you may look view any as you like by clicking on the View Filed Documents link at the top of the page.

Step 4 – Steps to form your new Business in Georgia

• Business name availability search (above)
• Internet domain availability search for website and email.
• Choose your entity type (LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp, Partnership, or Non-Profit Org)
• Obtain IRS EIN Number (employer identification number).  Create New IRS EIN Number
• Create Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws that include describing the business purpose of the entity, naming the registered agent, directors, registered address, operating guidelines, dissolution provisions, and other information.
• Determine if the new entity requires any federal, state, or local business licenses.
• Determine payroll tax requirements.
• Determine federal, state, and local tax filing requirements.
• Establish the business physical and/or mailing address, phone number, voicemail, website, email address, and business cards.
