Lookup a Business Entity
Step 1 – Start
In Vermont, to look up a business entity (Corporation, LLC, Limited Partnership) you must go to the Secretary of State’s Website. You will be able to lookup by Name (*It must be close to exact as the database is limited to 1,000 matching results).
After making your selection you will be re-directed to the Listings Page (See Below).
Step 2 – Choose Your Entity

Now you may be able to review all the results from the Secretary of State’s database. Click on the listing that matches the business you were looking for and click the ‘Retrieve Information’ button.
Now you will be sent to the Details Page.

Step 3 – Retrieve Information

You have now completed your search and now may be able to view all the information on file with the Secretary of State including the entity’s Name, Status, File Number, Type, State of Jurisdiction, Incorporation Date, Nature of Business, Month of Fiscal Year End, Registered Agent Name, Registered Agent Address, Member Managed, Expiration Term, Principal Office Address, Termination Date, Last Annual Report Filed, and all the Officers (President, VP, Treasurer, etc.).
Step 4 – Steps to form your new Business in Vermont

- Internet domain availability search for website and email.
- Choose your entity type (LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp, Partnership, or Non-Profit Org)
- Obtain IRS EIN Number (employer identification number). Create New IRS EIN Number
- Create Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws that include describing the business purpose of the entity, naming the registered agent, directors, registered address, operating guidelines, dissolution provisions, and other information.
- Determine if the new entity requires any federal, state, or local business licenses.
- Determine payroll tax requirements.
- Determine federal, state, and local tax filing requirements.
