Lookup a Business Entity

Step 1 – Start

To perform a search of a corporation in Colorado you must go to the Secretary of State’s Website. The most common way to lookup an entity is by Name but you may also use the ID and Document Number fields if you have those with you.

When typing in your keywords, it is important to try and use as many keywords as possible as the system will return all results that match the terms entered. After selecting you will be brought to the results page much like the sample below.

Step 2 – Choose Your Entity

After performing your search you will be able to view up to 20 results per page and be able to preview the Entities: ID Number, Document Number, Name, Type, Status with the Secretary of State, State of Formation, and the Formation Date.

To view all information on record you will want to click on the blue text link on the left-hand side underneath the ID Number. Below is a sample of what the record will look like.

Step 3 – Retrieve Information

Now you may see all the information on file with the Secretary of State in Colorado including but not limited to; Trade Name, Registered Agent, Status, Formation Date, Renewal Month, Expiration Date, Principal Office Address, and the option to view all previously filed documents (Filing History), File a Form Online, and to subscribe to E-Mail notifications.

Step 4 – Steps to form your new Business in Colorado

• Business name availability search (above)
• Internet domain availability search for website and email.
• Choose your entity type (LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp, Partnership, or Non-Profit Org)
• Obtain IRS EIN Number (employer identification number).  Create New IRS EIN Number
• Create Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws that include describing the business purpose of the entity, naming the registered agent, directors, registered address, operating guidelines, dissolution provisions, and other information.
• Determine if the new entity requires any federal, state, or local business licenses.
• Determine payroll tax requirements.
• Determine federal, state, and local tax filing requirements.
• Establish the business physical and/or mailing address, phone number, voicemail, website, email address, and business cards.
